History & Heritage of Hillbark Hotel

With a heritage that spans centuries, Hillbark’s story is as extraordinary as the building itself.

Within the hotel, the stained-glass windows and period fireplaces tell their own tales, each with a unique history waiting to be uncovered.

Whether you are enjoying an indulgent afternoon tea, celebrating a wedding in our magnificent Great Hall, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings of Royden Park, Hillbark Hotel invites you to connect with the rich tapestry of its heritage.

Journey Through Time

The Wirral Peninsula is steeped in history, with influences from the Celtic Cornovii people who settled here long before the Romans arrived.

Over the centuries, the area has borne witness to the comings and goings of Saxons, Vikings, and Normans, each leaving their unique mark on the cultural and architectural landscape.

From the lovingly preserved architectural features to the breathtaking surroundings of Royden Park, Hillbark offers an experience that is both regal and welcoming.

An Architectural Wonder

Hillbark Hotel is a harmonious blend of timeless craftsmanship and modern sophistication. The Tudor-inspired timber framing, intricate stained-glass windows, and grand fireplaces celebrate the artistry of the past. These historic details are complemented by contemporary comforts, creating a unique atmosphere that bridges centuries.

Originally built in 1891 as Bidston Court for soap magnate Robert William Hudson, the house is a masterpiece of Tudor revival architecture. In the 1920s, it was painstakingly relocated brick by brick to its current home in Royden Park, earning the nickname “The House That Moved.” Today, Hillbark is a Grade II* listed building and one of the Wirral’s most treasured landmarks.
